Museums in Leeds

Leeds is a city steeped in history and is home to a great many museums and places of interest.

Here are a few of the museums that are to be found in and around the city of Leeds.

Abbey House Museum

Abbey House Museum is a wonderful stroll into the past to visit the city of Leeds of the 1880s. The museum has gone to great lengths to reconstruct the streets of Victorian Leeds, and will transport you back through time with the sights and sounds of the period.

Abbey House Musuem also has a beautiful, quaint little tea room where you can buy tea, coffee, soft drinks, cakes, sandwiches and hot soups.

Opening Times and Admission Prices

The museum is open Tuesday to Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturdays 12 noon to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 5pm.

Adult: £3.50 (£2.80 with Leeds Card).
Concession: £2.50 (£2.00 with Leeds Card).
Child: £1.50 (£1.20 with Leeds Card).

How to get to Abbey House Museum

Abbey House Museum is located on the A65 road to Kirkstall, three miles outside of Leeds city centre so is easily accessible by car. There is a car park located behind the museum.

By public transport you can get to the museum by taking the bus to Kirkstall and alighting at the bus stop for Kirkstall Abbey.

Leeds Industrial Museum at Armley Mills

Leeds is renowned for its industrial past and the Armley Mills presents a fascinating insight into the city’s heritage.

The museum encompasses one of the largest textile museums in the world, with a steam engine Jack, 1920’s working cinema and the working Mule among other great sights to see.

Opening Times and Admission Prices
 
The Leeds Industrial Museum at Armley Mills is open Tuesday to Saturdays 10am to 5pm, and Sunday 1pm to 5pm.

Concession: £1.50 (£1.20 with Leeds Card).
Child: £1.00 (80p with Leeds Card).

 

How to get to Leeds Industrial Museum

By car, the museum at Armley Mills is located two miles out of the city centre on Canal Road, just off the A65 Kirkstall Road.

Kirsktall Abbey is a wonderful medieval abbey, and is one of the most complete examples of a medieval Cistercian abbey in Britain.

The abbey sits on the banks of the River Aire in beautiful parkland. Kirkstall Abbey itself is an amazing piece of architecture, and is host to a small but eye-catching collection of historical pieces from the life of the medieval monks that lived there.

Opening Times and Admission Prices
Kirkstall Abbey is open Tuesday to Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturdays 10am to 6pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm, although times do vary slightly through the seasons.

 

Admission is free to Kirkstall Abbey.

How to get to Kirkstall Abbey

Kirkstall Abbey is found just over three miles from Leeds centre on the A65 road to Kirkstall.

Kirkstall Abbey is opposite the Abbey House Museum and there is a car park behind the Abbey House Museum.

Leeds City Museum is an amazing day out for all the family, showcasing everything that anyone needs to know about the great city of Leeds.

The museum uses every medium possible to show just how special the city of Leeds is, including exhibitions of items past and present, interactive games and video displays. There is also a café and shop in the museum.

Opening Times and Admission Prices

Leeds City Museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 11am to 6pm, Thursday 11am to 8pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am to 5pm.

Admission is free to Leeds City Museum.

How to get to Leeds City Museum

The Leeds City Museum is to be found in the centre of Leeds, located in the Leeds Institute building in Millennium Square.

To visit by train walk out of the railway station and turn left, then continue to walk up Station Street as it merges into Park Row and Cookridge Street. After a short distance, turn left onto Great George Street, the Millenium Square is located on the right.
