The University of Leeds

university-of-leeds-by-schrodingersduck-at-flickrLeeds University is located in West Yorkshire, England and prides itself on being one of the largest and progressive institutions in the country. It was established in 1904 and became one of the six original civic “red brick” universities.

The land upon which Leeds University stands totals 1,230 acres, yet only 98 acres of this are taken up by the main campus, which is situated only a mile away from the Leeds’ city centre.

The main entrance of the campus is on Woodhouse Lane near to the Parkinson Building, the tower of which is a distinguishing feature and was part of the University’s logo until 2004.

Departments at Leeds University

Leeds University has a student population of over 30,000 people from over 130 countries. The university is made up of many departments including:

There are also around 5,000 postgraduate students from both England and abroad, who have full access to the academic research library, computing facilities and laboratories of the University. The Leeds University library is one of the largest in the country and contains something in the region of 2.8 million books, which include rare and special editions, as well as databases and electronic journals.

Leeds University’s partnerships allow it to provide accreditation of Degree Awards to Leeds College of Art and Design, and Leeds Trinity and All Saints.

The University has developed to become a leader in many distinctive fields of study such as Nanotechnology and Aviation Technology with Pilot Studies, Color Chemistry and Fire Science.

Awards won held by Leeds University

What makes Leeds University one of the best in the country is the high level of research, innovation and technology bases. This is supported by the great many prestigious awards and special memberships enjoyed by the University, such as the Worldwide Universities Network, Russell Group, White Rose Health Innovation Partnership and Northern Consortium.

In 2008, Leeds University was awarded the USA Thomas Edison Award for Innovation and the Times Higher Education Award for Technology as well as the Award for Innovation. The Green Gown Award was given to the University for its environmental practices.

Student Newspapers and Radio Station

Leeds University supports two of its own newspapers: “Leeds Student” and “Leeds Metropolitan University”, both of which are among the most active publications of their type in the country. “Lippy” magazine is another student publication, aimed specifically towards women; it is the Student Union’s Women’s magazine.

The University radio station “LSRfm.com” and the University TV station “ls:tv” are very successful and have each won several awards.

Clubs at Leeds University

The University Student Union has over 30 sporting clubs, as well as access to indoor and outdoor courts, fitness and weight rooms, saunas and aerobic classes, sun beds, grass and artificial pitches.

The excellent reputation of Leeds University places it 16th in the UK, 27th in Europe and 80th in the world.
