Shopping in Leeds – Part 1

The city of Leeds is an attractive shopping destination in the north of England, full of various shops and stores which can satisfy every taste and demand.
Because the centre of the Leeds is only a pedestrian area it makes it very good for shopping and walking. Alongside the north of Boar Lane and south of the Merrion Centre most of the major shops in the city can be found.

The Briggate and the Headrow are the two main shopping streets in the city. Briggate is known for its many shops, restaurants, cafes and banks while Headrow is mostly known for its own shopping centre along with cultural and civic attractions such as Leeds Town Hall, Leeds Central Library, Leeds Art Gallery and The Nehry Moore Institute.

One of the main markets in the city is Leeds Kirkgate Market, which is also the largest covered market in Europe.
Opening Times

It’s open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm except Wednesday when it is open from 9am to 2pm.

There are many shopping centers’ in the city of Leeds with the main ones being the Merrion Centre, the St Johns Centre, the Leeds Shopping Plaza and the Light.


The Merrion Centre


The Merrion Centre opened in 1964 and from that time until today has been managed by Town Centre Securities who also own the property. The centre, which covers more than 800,000 sq ft, consists of many shops, stalls, cafes, nightclubs, a bowling alley, public houses and offices.

Opening Times

The Merrion Centre is open from 9am to 5:30pm Monday-Saturday and 11am to 5pm Sunday.

St John’s Centre


The St Johns Centre opened in 1985 and is now one of the most visited and busiest places in the city of Leeds. It is located south, west and north by the Headrow, Albion Street and Merrion Street. There are two levels with more than thirty shops, as well as an individual secure car park. In 2005 the Centre was renovated.
Opening Times

The opening times are from 8am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and 11am to 5pm Sunday, also from 11am to 5pm on Bank Holidays.

Leeds Shopping Plaza


The Leeds Shopping Plaza is the Leeds’ central shopping mall established in 1977. In 2005 it was bought by the largest Real Estate Investment Trust in the UK called UK Land Security.

The streets of Boar Lane, Bond Street, Albion Street and Lower Basinghall are located around the centre, which is being expanded to about 270,000 sq ft in area.

The Leeds Shopping Plaza is a shopping centre, consisting of three other malls, including shops such as Boots, H&M, BHs, TK Maxx and Head.
Opening Times

The Shopping Plaza is open from 8am to 5:45pm Monday-Tuesday, from 8am to 6pm Friday and Saturday and 11am to 5pm every Sunday.

The Light


The Light was established in 1930 in the centre of the city of Leeds. The Light has many fantastic shops, delightful cafes, exquisite restaurants and bars, as well as a 13 screen multiplex cinema. The Light shopping centre is a wonderful place for having a great time and relaxing.

The Light has a four star Radisson SAS hotel, a parking area and 24 hours security which creates a safe and convenient atmosphere while visiting.
Opening Times

The Light is open Monday to Friday from 6am to 12:30am and Sundays from 8am to 12:30am.
