History of Temple Newsam

temple-newsam-house-by-tim-green-aka-atoach-flickrTemple Newsam is rich in history, having been an estate as such since the invasion of the Normans in 1066.

By 1545 Lord Darnley was born at Temple Newsam. The son of an Earl, Darnley decided to make Temple Newsam his home, and as such the estate stayed in Darnely’s family for 300 years.

In 1922 the house was sold by the last private owner of Temple Newsam to the city of Leeds, for the sum of thirty five thousand pounds.

Since that sale, Temple Newsam has been owned by Leeds City Council and has been open to the people of England to enjoy. The grounds and mansion are open to visitors all year round, except for special circumstances.
