Abbey House Museum

kirkstall-abbey-by-aldenchadwick-at-flickrAbbey House Museum is found in Kirkstall, Leeds and is located in the Gatehouse of Kirkstall Abbey which can be seen across the road from the museum.

Abbey House Museum is a wonderful museum set out in the style of Victorian Leeds. The museum comes complete with streets set out as they would have been during Victorian times.

As well as the main theme of Victorian Leeds, Abbey House Museum also has displays about Kirkstall Abbey, Leeds social history and many other interesting exhibits about the region on the second floor.

Abbey House Museum is fun to visit and comes complete with interactive displays and people in Victorian dress. You can visit Leeds High Street in the nineteenth century and visit Stephen Harding Gate to see just what shopping heaven in the nineteenth century was like. There are also houses where you can see the games and conversation Victorian families used to pass the time.

Abbey House Museum boasts a recreation of the poor residential area of the time called Abbey Fold. Here you can see the true divide of rich and poor from the rich pawn brokers sumptuous home to the chilly and cold home of an undertaker.

For those wishing to take a break why not take a look at the exhibits of Victorian toys, games and dolls in the Victorian dolls house or for something more adult visit the recreated Victorian drinking house called the Hark to Rover Inn.

Abbey House Museum also hosts a quaint coffee shop with inside and outside seating where you can buy hot and cold drinks, cakes, sandwiches and homemade soups.
