Leeds Industrial Museum at Armley Mills

Leeds is well known for its industrial past and it is the industrial revolution that armley-mills-by-tundrawolf-at-flickroccurred in Leeds that has built the city into what you see today.

Armley Mills is the museum that shows, from the eighteenth century to today, the full history of Leeds’ industrial past; from the revolution to its decline.


Housed in one of Leeds’ old buildings, from its industrial heartland, the Armley Mills is situated in an old wool mill that was the worlds largest when it was in its prime.


The wool mill was built by Benjamin Gott in 1805 and didn’t close as a working mill till the mid 1960’s. In the early 1980’s the empty and neglected building was turned into the museum that Armley Mills is today.

What can you see at Armley Mills?


Armley Mills has an extensive and wonderful collection of textile machinery used throughout the ages of the industrial revolution until its demise which makes for interesting viewing.

Supporting other areas of industry, the museum also hosts a huge array of heavy engineering equipment and machines that are a jaw dropping vision to behold.

Armley Mills also hosts a great collection of Narrow gauge railway rolling stock including four wonderful locomotives. The locomotives have all affectionately been given wonderful names, the locomotives are:

•    Barber – Thomas Green & Son 1908 ex gas works locomotive
•    Jack – Hunslet Engine Company pre 1957 locomotive
•    Lord Granby – Hudswell Clarke pre 1961 locomotive
•    Junin – Hudswell Clarke 1930 locomotive

If you have an interest in old locomotives or engineering and old machinery then Armley Mills will give you the day out you have dreamed of. Armley Mills is also an amazing place to visit to sample the wonderful history of Leeds and the historical culture of Yorkshire.

Visiting Armley Mills Industrial Museum – Opening Times and Admission Prices


Many visitors flock to Armley Mills every year to find out about the history of the region. Below you will find all the information you need to make your own trip.

Opening Times

Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sundays from 1pm to 5pm. The museum is closed Mondays except bank holidays where it is open from 10am to 5pm.

Adult: £3.00
Concession: £1.50
Child: £1.00

How to get to Armley Mills

By car take the A65 road to Kirkstall and the Armley Mills museum is located two miles out of Leeds city centre just off the Kirkstall Road. You will see brown tourist signs for the museum as you travel down the A65.
