Leeds Metropolitan University is a separate university to Leeds University and is specifically geared towards business qualifications.

Although Leeds Metropolitan is not as old as many other well known universities around the United Kingdom, it is a leader in its field as a business university, something that the Metropolitan University is proud of.

Many people aspire to go to Leeds Metropolitan every year for their higher education and only a select few manage to achieve this; for anyone wishing to learn business, Leeds Metropolitan is high on the list of where they would like to study.

History of Leeds Metropolitan

leeds_met_-the-independentThe University was formed in 1970 as a Polytechnic through the amalgamation of four colleges: the Leeds college of Technology, Leeds College of Commerce, Leeds College of Art and the Yorkshire College of Education and Home Economics; these four colleges were originally formed between 1824 and 1874.

The amalgamation occurred owing to all four colleges being housed on a central campus in the 1950’s, so it was only a matter of time before they combined to form one body -  the Leeds Metropolitan in 1970.

In 1992 Leeds Metropolitan Polytechnic gained University status and became Leeds Metropolitan University.

In 1998 the University merged with Harrogate College, and ten years later in 2008 the University made the decision to change its name to Leeds Carnegie University: this has been agreed in principal, although a full decision will not be made until sometime in 2010.
