Leeds City Museum
Located in the heart of the city centre, the Leeds City Museum offers an array of attractions sure to delight visitors of all ages.
There are six galleries within the Museum with permanent exhibitions, as well as temporary exhibitions which change throughout the year.
Exhibitions at the Leeds City Museum
Ancient Worlds
This exhibit covers a number of the ancient civilizations, from the Egyptians and a 3000-year old mummy, to the Greeks and Romans with examples of their statues and pottery.
This gallery lets visitors learn about life in the ancient world by the artifacts left behind by these diverse people, used as clues to our past.
Interactive exhibits include the opportunity to create a Roman style mosaic or to play archaeologist for an afternoon, attempting to reconstruct a Greek pot from broken fragments.
Life on Earth
Visitors to this gallery will learn much about our planet’s history over millions of years, as well as have the opportunity to interact hands-on with exhibits that bring to life the realities of our planet.
All different types of life on earth is covered, including the the sights and sounds of a tropical rain forest; the interactive displays allow you to feel the skin of a python, catch ants and dig for fossils.
The Leeds Arena
This area of the museum gives people the opportunity to explore Leeds through a giant walk-on map, where six interactive podiums show locally produced films showing different aspects about life in Leeds.
Or perhaps you will prefer to sit in the gallery which overlooks the display. Here visitors can enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the entire map and a bit of people-watching on the map below!
Leeds Collectors Gallery
Collecting is an absorbing and fascinating hobby shared by many people all over the world and from all walks of life.
From bottle caps to fine art, model cars and planes to magazines and glassware, there is no end to the sorts of things that we humans collect.
This gallery celebrates and explores the collector phenomenon and features pieces from several of the museums galleries, as well as a selection of modern day private collections.
The Leeds Story
The city of Leeds has a fascinating history dating back to prehistoric times.
Visitors to this exhibition will experience both a hands-on and audio-visual display that presents the full scope of this fascinating history.
Items on show include artifacts such as Bronze Age jet beads, the Castleford milestone and an Iron Age pipe made from a sheep’s leg bone.
World View: Out of Africa Gallery
The world is a very large place with thousands of different cultures scattered across five continents.
The World View Gallery’s exhibit focusses on the peoples, history and culture of Africa.
The display takes in pieces on migration, arts and crafts, musical instruments, costumes and masks as well as the unique Africa Now exhibit. Visitors are encouraged to try on traditional costumes and masks, and to try their skills on the drums!

Leeds City Museum is closed every Monday, except Bank Holidays.
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays open from 11.00am – 6.00pm
Thursday s from 11.00am – 8.00pm
Saturdays and Sundays 11.00am – 5.00pm
Admission to the museum is free, although there may be charges for some special exhibitions.

How To Find the Leeds City Museum
The Leeds City Museum is located on the east side of Millennium Square just north of Great George Street and near The Light car park.
The museum is approximately a fifteen minute walk from the city centre bus station.
By Rail: a free city bus that operates from Leeds Rail Station will drop visitors at Leeds General Infirmary, just across Millennium Square from the museum.
