Lotherton Hall and Estate

Lotherton Hall is a beautiful building set in the grounds of Lotherton Hall Estate. The Estate used to be the family home of the Gascoigne family, until Leeds City Council took over control of the building in 1968 and opened it to the public.

Lotherton has been around since the 7th Century, and records in 1086 suggest a hall or manor house had been built here, although it wasn’t until 1893 that the house took on its present form.

The house boasts a large collection of furniture and paintings, as well as collections of ceramics and costume displays from history.

Outside the Hall you can visit the formal garden, which are a treat for any gardener and for those who have a keen eye for plants. The gardens are the painstaking work of Mrs. Laura Gwendolen Gasgoigne who split the garden into four and created a different natural area in each quarter.

These birds include snowy owls, cassowaries and flamingoes, and many are rare and endangered species that are part of specific conservation and breeding programmes

The grounds also contain a number of Red Deer.

Lotherton Hall has three wonderful nature trails to enjoy; each walk has its own unique properties that make it well worth following all three.

The Captain Wood Walk, the shortest of the three, takes ramblers through some old world woodland and is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

The Boundary Trail takes you round the cattle and horse paddocks, and is a circular walk of about two-thirds of a mile. This route past hedgerows, panoramic views and wildflowers is suitable for pushchairs and electric wheelchairs.

The Coburnhill Wood Walk is probably the most difficult of the three walks, an ancient green track and public right of way south of Lotherton Hall Estate towards Micklefield.
