Southend United 0 – 0 Leeds United

A dire display sees Leeds UFC drop their first points of the new season against Southend.

Despite a number of early chances for Jermaine Beckford, Patrick Kisnorbo and Robert Snodgrass, the match remained goal-less.

But in the 66th minute, Southend United were handed a penalty after Leigh Bromby brought down striker Lee Barnard.

Leeds’ keeper Shane Higgs then saved Barnard’s shot, earning a solitary point following an eight-match winning streak for the visitors.

Leeds United 4 – 1 Gillingham FC

(Johnson 14, 28,      (Barcham 50)
Howson 46,
Beckford 80)

A first-half brace for midfielder Bradley Johnson starts a rout to send Leeds to the top of League One once more.

Johnson’s first was a header from a Robert Snodgrass corner, and just before the half-hour mark he struck for a second.

Jonathan Howson continued the theme immediatley after the restart, but Gillingham had a reply from Andy Barcham five minutes later.

Finally, Jermaine Beckford made it four after Michael Doyle had a shot bounce off Gillingham’s crossbar.

Leeds United boss Simon Grayson told BBC Radio Leeds: “We have set ourselves very high standards so far this season.
“But we want to keep making them better as both individuals and as a squad.
“We want to keep our good run going and to do that we need to keep our standards very high and not take our foot off the gas and we certainly kept pushing today.”

Leeds United 0 – 1 Liverpool FC
(Ngog 66)

A trying third-round tie at Elland Road takes a sole David Ngog goal to halt Leeds’ progress to the last 16.

The visitors started the stronger side, but Leeds got over any nerves after five minutes to make for a challenging match.

Lubomir Michalik had a headed goal disallowed for offside, whilst Jermaine Beckford fail to find the target, going wide and high on a couple of occassions. Michael Doyle also headed wide in the first half, as all the pressure was from the home team.

Ngog’s excellent strike after the hour mark sealed the win, although a proud Leeds may rue the chances not taken, it was a fine display against a poorer Premier League side.

Leeds boss Simon Grayson said after the game: “I felt Jermaine was level for the goal (we had disallowed) but we are talking marginal errors at times.
“I’m loathed to criticise but when you look he was level and the goal should have stood.
“We certainly matched them and on another night we might have got the victory our performance deserved.”

Leeds United’s next match will be on Saturday 26th September, against MK Dons at stadium:mk
