Leeds University Theatre Group presents Oscar Wilde’s social satire, An Ideal Husband.
“We men adore women for their imperfections but you women will insist on putting your men on a pedestal, obliged to perfection.”
Wilde’s social satire “An Ideal Husband” depicts a world of love, deception, blackmail and idealism. Living in this world is the pure-hearted Lady Chiltern. Her ideal husband, Lord Robert Chiltern, a politician beyond reproach, has a spotless reputation. His best friend, Lord Goring, is a charming flirt with little direction and no inclination to marry. When an old acquaintance arrives in London threatening to reveal a sordid secret from Lord Chiltern’s past, his less than ideal friend may just be the ideal solution. As the wit and wickedness flies, a perfect career, reputation and marriage promises to be wrecked, in a society that is as moralising as it is corrupt.
