This month Silky introduces Bruce Moreton and Toby Hadke. Buy tickets early to avoid depression!

Scotland ’s acclaimed comic, storyteller and social commentator, Bruce Moreton, was a founder of the Funny Farm Comedy Collective which in 1989 helped kick-start the Scottish stand-up scene. UK attention soon followed for Bruce with his appearances on C4’s Halfway to Paradise in 1990, before writing and performing his own C4 shows, Shoe Fetishist’s Guide and, in 1993, the series Sin with Bruce Moreton.

Toby Hadoke is the highly regarded regular compere at XS MALARKEY, Manchester ’s multi-award winning comedy venue. He has also headlined at many Northern comedy venues and is an accomplished serious actor with experience on television, the stage and even in an opera! Toby’s stand-up is renowned for its topicality and occasionally uncompromising political slant, and his delivery giddily straddles the humbly self-deprecating to the ferociously in-your-face. He is a frequent broadcaster on BBC radio, and live audiences can get drenched in his saliva (sorry, entertained by him) at XS Malarkey and Manchester’s The Comedy Store on a regular.

A Hollywood has-been slums it in an amateur British production: it’s a description that covers both plot and film in this amiable but scattershot comedy.

Burt Reynolds is Jefferson Steel, a pampered action star desperate to make a comeback. He accepts an offer to do Shakespeare in Stratford, little knowing that it’s not upon Avon, but the (fictional) village of Stratford St John in Suffolk.

Naturally, the amateur theatre group is in raptures about the arrival of their LA King Lear, but the man himself is less than enthused about acting alongside pig farmers and staying in a B&B with no ensuite facilities. It’s a reasonably amusing idea, and the script duly has fun with the contrasts between LA-la land and sleepy Suffolk. Steel pops his shoes outside his bedroom door only for a dog to chew on them. Later, the local mobile library is hurriedly transformed into a makeshift trailer.

Such antics raise a smile, but no belly laughs. Those are reserved soley for Imelda Staunton, who puts in a jolly performance as the owner of the B&B and Steel’s biggest fan. Derek Jacobi also acts a bland Reynolds off the screen in a no-brainer role as a Shakesperian purist. But the story is completely preposterous, as anyone with a passing knowledge of Hollywood and agents (ie ‘Entourage’ viewers) will know. It’s also hastily edited and, in places, poorly cast. The talents of Staunton, Jacobi and love interest Samantha Bond aside, the title may be more accurate than originally intended.

Director: Andy Cadiff, UK, 2008, 97 mins, 15.

Cast: Burt Reynolds, Camilla Arfwedson, Samantha Bond, Derek Jacobi, Imelda Staunton

During the course of our gigging schedule we have come to perform on the same stage and at the same events as such artists as Dennis Rollins, Sean Hargreaves, Chumbawamba, Courtney Pine, James Taylor Quartet, Kate Rusby, Soweto Kinch and Jazz Jamaica to name a few.

The band is directed by jazz pianist and festival organiser (also leader of the Fruit Tree band) Dave Evans who is constantly looking for new members to join this exciting, eclectic and sometimes anarchic band.

Friday 23/04/2010 doors 7.30 Tickets : £8 in advance /£10 on the door

Following the release of his ‘luminously produced’ (Mojo) 6th Album, California, Charlottesville, Virginia’s, Paul Curreri, returns to the UK with his most excellent band.

“He is something of a quiet genius, having a gift for skewed, elliptical or downright dutch arrangements of the familiar tropes of American music… He is so quietly, persistently musical that he might be the JJ Cale or Jesse Winchester of our time.” — THE INDEPENDENT

With a deeply rooted guitar style – seemingly flecked by Gary Davis, Frisell, Ali Farka, Marc Ribot – this April,
Virginia songwriter Paul Curreri will be touring the UK with his consistently impressive English quartet – featuring fellow Tin Angel Records label mates Lucy Ann Sale on percussion & keys, Joe Carvell (DON’T MOVE!) on bass, and Euan Rodger (Black Carrot) on drums.

The group’s previous tour last November concluded with 3 sold-out nights at London’s Betsey Trotwood. “Yeah, well,” Paul laughs, “it’s a pretty small joint.” That tour marked Curreri’s first UK tour in ages, due to a severe throat injury that he suffered in July of 2008. Forced off the road for the bulk of 2009, Curreri holed up and assembled his sonically vivid 6th album, California.

Uncut gave it 4 stars. Said MOJO, “His multi-instrumental skills consistently impress. Never less than accomplished, and at their best, give Dylan, Joe Henry, and Springsteen a run for their money.” As he did on his critically heralded previous effort, 2007’s snarling The Velvet Rut (which MOJO gave 5 stars), the album was recorded and performed solely by Curreri – with the exception of an appearance by his enchanting wife Devon Sproule on a duet of Michael Hurley’s “Wildgeeses.” (Curreri also produced Sproule’s recent release ¡Don’t Hurry For Heaven!)

Considering the health circumstances, California is surprisingly upbeat and harmonius. When asked how he managed to create such a forward-leaning, positive album while dealing with what many would regard as a career and personal crisis, a long moment passes before he replies. “Well, c’mon. We all live with hardship. But maybe it’s the price paid for being surrounded by and involving oneself with only what feels authentic and important. I get to play music, even if – yeah – on occasion it’s just at home. But I dunno… sometimes I wonder if fishing for more doesn’t rip something from someone who – for better or worse – wants or needs it more deeply. It was a really peaceful year.” Yeah, but what of hitting the road again? “Oh forget it, man,” he laughs, “I absolutely can’t wait.”
