University chooses Leeds Corn Exchange for a free concert on 10th September to launch its International Concert Series.

In an exciting break with tradition, Leeds University has chosen Leeds Corn Exchange as the venue for the first recital in its International Concert Series. This series is a familiar part of the cultural calendar, and its inaugural event this year will be a free lunchtime concert on Friday 10th September from 1.05pm – 1.55pm.

“We are delighted to be hosting such a prestigious cultural event at Leeds Corn Exchange,” comments Louise Smith Centre Manager. “Pianist Daniel Gordon will be joined by postgraduate students from the University for an exciting programme of chamber music appropriate to our beautifully restored centre. The concert will be free and need not be booked in advance.”

This year’s concert series boasts a truly international programme with performers from across Europe, and visitors from the USA and the Indian sub-continent. Later in the year, Poet Sir Andrew Motion will join pianist Ian Buckle in a programme of Larkin’s poetry and 20th century piano music, and BBC Radio Three will record four of the regular Friday lunchtime concerts for broadcast.

Works for the piano feature strongly and there are excursions into musical theatre and almost every genre of music. A number of off-campus events are planned to bring the programme into the city and hopefully attract locals onto the campus.

Delicate warm tones radiate from Rachel Grimes’s piano; this should prove to be an intimate show from the some time member of the brilliant Rachel’s. Nils Frahm, pianist, is poised to find a wider audience with this set of stellar improvisations.

We owe Rachel Grimes big.
With a proliferation of neo-classicists now banging on the eardrums of indie kids everywhere, it’s easy to forget the impact her chamber music ensemble made on the guitar-dominated dominions of alternative music in the mid-90s.
Arguably, without her and the group to which she lent her name, artists like Max Richter, Jóhann Jóhannsson and even Sigur Rós would not have found such a wide and receptive audience.

Nils Frahm:

Taught by the student of a student of Tchaikovsky, Frahm’s style is affecting; instilled with a sense of melancholia, he soothes and teases the listener as the record writhes between blackened terseness to a more soothing fluidity.

An informative illustrated talk from John Gregory, member of the West Yorkshire Bat Group, roost visitor and trainer for Natural England, followed by a walk around the lakeside to observe and listen for the bat species living at Harewood.

Re-live the excitement of a night at The Cavern Club in the 1960s in this fantastic new show, originating from ‘the most famous beat club in the world’!

Recapturing those times is The Beat Club, featuring Liverpool-born and Cavern veteran, Steve Quillon.

Spotlighting the years 1965 and 1969, the show features pulsating live music, scouse humour, choreography and audience participation.

You’ll see how the music and on-stage fashion changed at the club, and hear songs by The Beatles, The Drifters, The Searchers, The Rolling Stones, and The Who to name but a few.
