Screen Seven – The Wedding

If no-one gets thrashed, a wedding’s a failure,” comments the priest nonchalantly during The Wedding, a Polish comedy drama set during a particularly eventful reception.

A quick scrap outside is hardly the worst of it; think severed digits, dead bodies, exploding toilets, forbidden nookie and lashings and lashing of vodka. If all this makes it sound like a gross-out comedy, think again: this is a grim, intense world in which the only laughs are jet black.

As with many a chaotic comedy-drama, the film starts peacefully; the ceremony goes without a hitch, and the bride and groom look happy enough. But the bride’s father seems unduly concerned about showing off his wealth: a trait that both drives the plot forward and delivers a stern message about materialism versus family love. Bride Kasia is one of the film’s few positive figures: everyone else seems to be preoccupied with either money or sex, and they’re looking for both in the wrong places.

Clearly, The Wedding isn’t a cheery watch, but it is a fitfully amusing one. Even if many of the cultural references are lost in translation, others survive the journey: drunken wedding guests get everywhere, after all. Chaos sometimes comes before characterisation, however: people slip up before you’ve got the measure of them, making their downfall both less credible and less satisfying. But as Polish dramas about weddings go, this is a bit of a winner, and a pleasing antidote to Hollywood happy endings.

Rolls Royce Rally

Join us and celebrate in style with around 400 Rolls Royce and Bentley cars including models from the early 1900s right through to the present day, driving from the UK, Europe and the USA to park up on the North Front at Harewood.

Many of these cars have been built to the personal specification of members of the aristocracy, film stars, Company Chairmen, and other well known personalities and are complete one-offs with no other car in the world being exactly alike.

A selection of the cars will be paraded during the afternoon with a knowledgeable commentator giving details of their manufacture and past ownership.

The event is a social occasion with entertainment from a Brass band and trade stands for browsing and buying.

It’s a great opportunity for members of the Rolls Royce Enthusiasts’ Club to meet old friends, look at their cars, learn a little of what has happened over the previous year, and maybe learn a few “tricks” that come in useful when restoring or maintaining their own cars.

When he learns that his estranged daughter is terminally ill, he and a loose group of misfit concoct a daring escape plan. Director Wyatt reinvigorates the prison-break drama here, by ingeniously spicing together the planning, and the escape itself. The Escapist musters tension that seems insurmountable, before delivering one hell of an emotional payoff.

52 Skidoo are a three-piece Harlem swing band, that have turned back the clock to play the dazzling repertoire of Fats Waller in the style for which it was written.

They bring back to life the forgotten era of prohibition, speakeasys, vaudeville, tin pan alley, rent parties, stride piano and hot jazz.

Classic favourites like ‘Ain’t Misbehavin‘, ‘The Joint is Jumpin’ and ‘Your Feet’s Too Big’ are carefully woven into lesser known Waller hits like ‘Dinah’ , ‘S’pozin’ and ‘I’m Crazy ’bout My Baby’ to create an authentic 1920/30’s Harlem party atmosphere.

Last year, our Vintage Fairs raised over £24,000 for St. Gemma's Hospice. With widespread coverage across Leeds and respected publications such as Antiques Diary and Antiques Trade Gazette, our Vintage Fair is getting increasingly popular, with young and old alike.

There will be over 20 stallholders over the weekend and, as ever, we will be selling all of the vintage, retro and collectable goods that have been donated to St. Gemma's Hospice charity shops around Leeds.

Goods on sale include clothing, accessories, jewellery, artwork, books, records, furniture, homeware, crafts, glassware and much more!

We will be selling cupcakes, teas and coffees in our Retro Cafe.

Bat Walk 28th July 2010
7.30pm – 10.00pm

An informative illustrated talk from John Gregory, member of the West Yorkshire Bat Group, roost visitor and trainer for Natural England, followed by a walk around the lakeside to observe and listen for the bat species living at Harewood.

Please bring a torch and wear appropriate clothing and footwear.

Harewood House is located seven miles north of Leeds city centre in the village of Harewood.


By Car: from Leeds take the A58 out of the centre and then the A61 Harrogate Road for just over eight miles. Once on the A61 near Harewood follow the signposts for Harewood House.


By Bus: from Leeds, you can get the number 36 bus to Harewood. This bus runs three times an hour from Monday to Saturday and twice an hour on Sundays.

The Museum is next to St. James’s Hospital, 2 miles to the North East of the city centre.

By Bus: Frequent bus services run from Leeds city centre. Numbers 4, 42, 49, 50, 50A, 61 all stop outside the Museum.

By Car: From M621 follow signs for York (A64) then follow the brown tourist signs. From the North, take the A58 towards the city, and then follow the brown tourist signs.
