Leeds Railway: Services for Leeds and West Yorkshire

 
The Airedale Line connects the city of Leeds with Morecambe and Carlisle: the line is mainly served by electric trains between Skipton and Carlisle, with diesel services running to Lancaster and Morecambe; the Airedale Line also includes the Settle to Carlisle line, a stunningly beautiful railway that rolls through the Yorkshire Dales.
 
The Calverdale Line runs to Blackpool North and Manchester Victoria, with local trains to Halifax, Brighouse and Huddersfield: the Rochdale Canal runs parallel to the railway line from Rochdale to Sowerby Bridge, and there are views of the South Pennines; this is a great line for outdoor enthusiasts, who can hop off en-route, as well as those wanting to visit the big city. 
 
If a day out at Meadowhall shopping centre is required, the Hallam Line connects Leeds and Sheffield via Barnsley and Sheffield; a somewhat faster service is provided on the Wakefield Line.
 
The Harrogate Line is operated by Northern Rail and runs through the two-mile Bramhope Tunnel to Harrogate, then on to Knaresborough every half hour, with hourly trains to York. 
 
Part of the TransPennine Express network is formed by the Huddersfield Line. It’s one of the busiest rail services on the West Yorkshire Metro Train network, with local trains operated by Northern Rail from  
Leeds to Huddersfield and Manchester Victoria along the River Colne Valley.
 
The Wakefield Line runs frequent InterCity services between Leeds, Wakefield, Doncaster or Sheffield and a local stopping service; the section between Leeds and Doncaster forms part of the East Coast Main Line.
 
An electric train service is operated along the Wharfedale Line through the Aire valley, climbing a hill to the market town of Ilkley.
 
Connecting Leeds to its north and east, the York and Selby Lines run local services with extensions via Transpennine Express and Virgin Cross Country to Newcastle, Scarborough, Middlesbrough and Hull.

Church of St Peter

The Church of St. Peter is also the Leeds Parish Church and is a wonderful piece of historical and religious architecture that sits proudly in the heart of Leeds city centre.

For those that wish to pray there are regular prayers, these are usually on a Sunday where between one and three religious prayer sessions can be found.

The church has a café and gift shop that is open from 10.00am to 4.00pm on weekdays, and 10.00am to 2.00pm on Saturdays.

Beth Hamidrash Hagadol Synagogue

Built in 1969, the Beth Hamidrash Hagadol Synagogue is one of – if not the – biggest Orthodox synagogues in the whole of northern England.

The service times do differ slightly from week to week but there is always a morning Shacharit and evening Mincha/Maariv on a daily basis. These services are usually around 7.30am and 7.30pm respectively.

The synagogue has a gift and book shop for those that wish to have a wonderful gift for a family or friend.

South Parade Baptist Church

South Parade Baptist Church is a wonderful, small but close knit Baptist church. Set in a new building, this church sees many Christians drawn from many different backgrounds to worship God.

Leeds Makkah Masjid

Leeds Makkah Masjid is a majestic mosque located just outside the centre of the city, catering to the large Islamic community in Leeds.

The Mosque was built in the 1970s through the support of the Leeds community and the Muslim Council of Leeds.

The Mosque is at the forefront of teaching about Islam to anyone who wishes to learn, and hosts Islam question and answer sessions, study circles, courses and lectures.

As with all Islamic prayers the times do differ from day to day, month to month: the Leeds Makkah Masjid Mosque caters to all twelve prayers from Fajr to Jumah.

Middleton Colliery Railway

The Middleton Colliery Railway is one of the oldest in the world and was the first commercially successful steam locomotive, paving the way for the world’s first passenger railway - the Stockton and Darlington Railway of 1825. It is situated about two miles south of Leeds City Centre alongside the M621 Motorway at Junction 5.

 
The railway ran for three miles between the city of Leeds and Middleton Colliery to the south. It was originally constructed in 1758 as a privately financed venture when it was used by horse drawn trucks called corves, and was a cheap method of carrying coal from Middleton Pits to Casson Close. It became the first railway to be granted powers by an act of Parliament.
 
In 1812 the manager of the colliery John Blenkinsop relaid the track with a toothed rail to give added traction to enable it to bear heavier loads: he employed an engineer, Matthew Murray of Stockton on Tees to build a steam locomotive for the colliery with a pinion that would mesh with the rail; Murray’s engine was called Salamanca and was the first ever to use two cylinders. It remained in use for 20 years with three more locomotives built at a later date. The railway was converted to a 4ft 8” standard gauge in 1881.
 
In 1960 Middleton Colliery Railway received heritage status, run by volunteers from the Middleton Railway Trust Ltd and funded by the Heritage lottery; a passenger service came into operation in 1969 and is operated at weekends and public holidays, running along the one mile track between Moor Road Hunslet and Park Halt on the edge of Middleton Park.
 

 
The Station houses an Engine House with a selection of locomotives built in the Hunslet area by the famous Leeds manufacturer John Fowler, and includes the Sir Berkeley Manning built in 1890 that was featured in the BBC adaptation of The Railway Children, as well as the Mirvale, designed in 1882.

Hyde Park Picture House

There’s something magical about watching a film in Hyde Park Picture House.

Located in the heart of Hyde Park, a bohemian community where many students live and a 25 minute walk from Leeds city centre, the ornate gas lamp outside lights up the Edwardian facade like a film set, as you enter past the small ticket kiosk… into the slightly musty interior to be whisked back to the heyday of the grand old Picture Houses, that provided the main entertainment for the general public from 1910 to the 1940s.

These cinemas were purpose built to screen the first moving pictures on celluloid film, a process pioneered by the French brothers, August and Louis Lumière and subsequently the British inventor William Friese-Green. Though original recordings were short documentaries of every day events, the early 20th century saw the emergence of narrative film with camera movements, optical effects and editing.Designed to  make ordinary people feel like royalty, the Picture Houses reflected all the glamour and grandeur of aristocratic architecture, being highly decorated in styles that were variously Art Deco, High Gothic, Moroccan, Mediterranean, Renaissance, Hindu and even Egyptian revival.

Hyde Park Picture House: A Cinema Through The Ages

The Hyde Park Picture House is an example of an Edwardian venue and is a Grade ll listed building.

As expectant whispers die down a red curtain swishes open to reveal the screen, and you’re taken back to the days when watching a film was truly a special occasion: when romance was in the air and courtships were conducted on the back row beneath a canopy of cigarette smoke.

As happened in all the old Picture Houses there’s a proper intermission when you can join an orderly queue for delicious ice-cream served by kindly staff, before returning to your squidgy seat that squeaks as you sit down! For all the Picture House’s history, modern day comforts are not neglected: you can enjoy good-quality popcorn served alongside the Earl Grey tea, and you’ll find it’s at a much cheaper cost than the jumbo sized containers dished out in the multiplexes.

Hyde Park Picture House was originally built as a hotel in 1908 and converted to a cinema in 1914 amidst the turmoil surrounding the outbreak of World War l, as thousands of the young men of Leeds rushed to enlist in the armed services. On 7th November 1914, the Hyde Park Picture House opened its doors to the public for the first time and amongst the news of war and earth-shattering events all over the world, a small advert in the Yorkshire Evening Post proclaimed it the “Cosiest in Leeds.”

The first film shown was Their Only Son, billed as a patriotic drama, followed by An English Man’s Honor about a possible German invasion of Britain. Fortunately the progress of the war didn’t interfere with the cinema’s success, in fact it provided a useful service screening news reels and bulletins, war footage and morale boosting dramas as well as providing an avenue of escape into different worlds for the war weary citizens of Leeds. Audiences continued to grow as the cinema reached its zenith and a visit to the Picture House became for many, the highlight of the week.

Over the years the Picture House rode the storm of technical developments and social change: the advent of talkies in the late 20s meant that it had to be quickly converted to relay sound; the 1930s saw the small cinema under threat with the advent of the “super cinemas” in Leeds, huge city centre movie houses capable of seating up to 3,000 people; in the 1950s, as television became accessible in homes, people preferred to stay at home to watch their favourite programmes, a trend that continued into the 1980s and 90s when the advent of video and later DVDs posed a new threat.

Ironically, the renaissance that came about after huge blockbuster movies such as Star Wars and Jaws brought audiences back to the cinema in droves was not so beneficial for smaller movie houses – as multiplexes began to spring up in the out of town shopping areas, city centre cinemas were forced to convert to bingo halls, restaurants and nightclubs.

In 1989 Hyde Park Picture House reached a turning point when it was threatened with closure. Fortunately, Leeds City Council moved to rescue it from the brink of disaster and made it part of the Leeds Grand Theatre and Opera House Ltd; an independent company dedicated to preserving some of Leeds’ most iconic and culturally important buildings; the Leeds Grand Theatre and Opera House, the City Varieties and the Hyde Park Picture House. The company operates as a registered charity and is governed by its memorandum and articles of association.

There’s the added bonus that staff are also more motivated and dedicated, which creates a friendly atmosphere; adding to the original decor, retro atmosphere and enthusiastic clientele, the Hyde Park Picture House offers a unique and homely backdrop to some of the world’s best films.

Regulars agree that only good films are shown, so you can’t go wrong and you can sign up to receive free weekly listings, emails, updates and news or download the programme in PDF format. Online booking is also available. Though admission prices are around the same as for a multiplex, sweets and drinks are cheaper and you can even bring your own.

How to find the Hyde Park Picture House

By Car: from city centre follow signs for A660 to Skipton to Woodhouse Lane. From North Leeds, follow signs to A660. Hyde Park is in between Headingley and Leeds City Centre.
Parking is available on the forecourt or on the street around the cinema.

By Bus: from city centre – the 56 runs frequently and stops right outside the cinema. Alternatively take the 1, 28, 95, 96, 97 or 97A and get off at Hyde Park Corner.

By Train: take the train to Burley Park Station and take the Cardigan Road exit.

Accessibility:
Level access is available to the stalls via the Brudenell Road fire exit. There are four wheelchair spaces in auditorium but toilets are not yet accessible via wheelchair. Full assistance is available. Some films have audio description and sub titles.
Guide dogs welcome.

What Leeds is Famous For!

Leeds is situated in West Yorkshire in the north of England, the city is the fourth largest in England with almost 450,000 citizens, but what exactly makes the city of Leeds famous other than how big it is?

The fame of Leeds isn’t attributed to only one thing, as Leeds is a big city with a big heart and because of this many people will know Leeds for many different reasons. Here are a number of points that keep the city in our minds.

Leeds and The Industrial Revolution

Leeds was a small city until the industrial revolution, when it grew at a huge rate and became famous for its textiles, chemicals, leather and pottery. The industrialization of Leeds led to the building of the Leeds to Liverpool Canal and the Aire and Calder Navigation.

Leeds was so well known in the time of Industrial Revolution in England, that nearly half of the exports from the country passed through or was created in the city.

Sport in Leeds

Leeds is known all over the world for sport and its major teams: perhaps the most famous being the football team Leeds United Football Club, the Rugby Union team Leeds Carnegie and the Rugby League side Leeds Rhinos. All these teams have been at the top of their respective sports at points in the history of their clubs, and for that are followed by fans and supporters across the globe.

The University of Leeds

The University of Leeds is another reason for pride in the city. The University of Leeds dates back to 1831 and has 33,000 students - it is most famous for its international research.

The Royal Armouries Museum Leeds

The Royal Armouries Museum is the oldest museum in the UK and potentially the oldest in the world. The museum was opened in the seventeenth century, and houses the British national collection of arms and armour.

Leeds Bradford International Airport

Leeds Bradford International Airport is a new airport for commercial travel in Leeds, but since it started to grow as an airport it has become well known worldwide, with nearly three million passengers passing through the airport annually.

Leeds Railway Station: Leeds City

Leeds Railway Station - also known as Leeds City – is the busiest mainline station in the UK after London and Glasgow, with around 101,000 passengers and over 900 trains passing through each day on journeys to most major UK destinations.

 
Located on New Station Street at the foot of Park Row and behind the famous Queens Hotel, the station sits on a hill leading down to the Leeds Canal Basin and is built over The Dark Arches: a labyrinth of vaulted Victorian arches and tunnels that now hold Granary Wharf shopping centre; sometimes described as Leeds’ best kept secret, the Granary Wharf centre attracts specialist retailers from all over the world and holds an interesting mix of cafés, bars and restaurants.
 

Leeds Railway Station: A Short History

 
The city of Leeds was originally served by three stations in close proximity to each other: New Station, Wellington Station and Leeds Central. The first line was introduced in 1834 by the Leeds and Selby Railway with a terminus to the east of the city. When North Midland Railway constructed a line from Derby via Rotherham to Hunslet Lane, the station extended to Wellington Street and became known as Wellington Station. Leeds Central, also located on Wellington Street, opened in 1854 as a dual project by the Manchester and Leeds Railway and the London and North Western Railway, and in 1869 New Station was built adjacent to Wellington Station, partially on a bridge over the River Aire being jointly owned by the LNWR and the North Eastern Railway.  
 
After the Railways Act of 1921 – when all railways were formed into four companies – New Station and Wellington Street Station merged to form Leeds City Station in 1938. The construction of the north concourse and the Queens Hotel also took place at this time. Later buildings did not appear until 1962 when the architect John Poulson, who was later to achieve notoriety around his bribery and corruption of senior politicians, designed the administrative building: British Railways House, now City House.
 
In 1967 Central station was diverted into the City Station and became the single main railway station serving Leeds. At this time on any typical day, the station saw the arrival and departure of 500 trains, and 2.75 million passenger journeys were made each year. At this rate, the station quickly outgrew its capacity in the 1990s and the ambitious Leeds 1st building project was undertaken to expand the platforms from 12 to 17, re-roof the concourse and construct a new footbridge.
 
Work is still being carried out on the south side of the building to provide a new entrance for easier access from the expanding south side of the city, which is due to be opened in 2012.
 
Leeds Railway Station has 17 platforms which make it the largest in England outside of London.
 
Five train operators run services from the station: Northern Trains, Transpennine Express, East Coast, Arriva Cross Country and East Midland Trains; providing connections to London, Bristol, Plymouth and the South West, Nottingham, Birmingham and the Midlands, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Hull, Selby and Doncaster, York, Edinburgh and the North East, and Manchester, Liverpool and the North West. 
 
One of only 18 stations in Britain to be managed by Network Rail, it is also the terminus for the Settle to Carlisle line – recently voted the second most beautiful railway in the world!
 
After the recent £245m modernisation when the metal canopy was replaced with a new glass roof, the station is a light and cheerful point of arrival or departure and contains major retail facilities including Burger King, MacDonalds, Starbucks, Wetherspoons, Boots, Upper Crust, Marks & Spencer Simply Food and two branches of WHSmith from which to buy that all important book for reading on the journey!
 
Parking is managed by APCOCA and taxis are on the south concourse entrance on New Station Street.  
 
Toilet facilities are available on the south concourse and platforms 8, 12 and 15 with baby changing facilities on platform 12 and the south concourse; the latter has accessible toilets, also found on platforms 8 and 12.
 
Although Leeds was one of the last stations to use manned ticket barriers, Northern Rail removed them in 2008 and there are now automated ticket gates to speed up the flow of passengers.

Hollybush Conservation Centre 

Located just three miles outside of Leeds city centre in the Kirkstall area, Hollybush Conservation Centre is a wonderful conservation area hosting a wildlife garden full of animals and wildflowers.

Kirkstall Abbey Estate

 
Another wonderful park located in Kirkstall is the Kirkstall Abbey Estate.
 
This estate comprises of two large park areas, one of which is used for ball games and the other for recreation. 
 
Within the two parks are the ruins of the Kirkstall Abbey and the Abbey House Museum.

Middleton Park

 
Middleton Park is found four miles south of Leeds city centre, and is a huge expanse of 630 acres.
 
Middleton Park is a natural treasure of ancient woodland dating back to the 1600’s.

Harewood House and Gardens

Harewood House is a ‘St Petersburg palace on a Yorkshire hill’, a huge stately home owned by the Queens cousin, the Earl of Harewood.
 
If a beautiful stately home set in the most amazing grounds interests you then a visit to Harewood House is a must, as it was voted England’s Large Visitor Attraction of the Year 2009.
 

Harewood House History

 
Harewood House was built over the space of 12 years from 1759 to 1771 for the Lascelles family, commissioned by Edwin Lascelles and paid for by the money made by his father Henry from the West Indian sugar trade.
 
The grounds in which the House is situated were designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown at the time of Harewood’s completion. A terrace was later added to the garden in 1884.
 
During both World Wars, Harewood House served as a convalescent hospital.
 

Harewood House Today

 
Visitors are able to walk around the grand Harewood House, one of the treasure houses of England, taking in the architecture of the building and opulence of the beautifully hand-crafted 18th century furniture.
 
Outside the House there is the Harewood Bird Garden which houses over 100 species of birds from around the world, over a third of which are considered endangered, and is one of England’s most important avian collections. The Bird Garden allows visitors to enjoy seeing many exotic birds in a specially created sympathetic habitat.
 
Harewood House also has four wonderful nature walks; these are the Terrace Garden Walk, Lakeside Walk, Rock Garden and Walled Garden Walk and the Adventure Playground.
 
Each of these nature walks differs in length and takes visitors around different areas of the grounds, so they can really get to see the full splendour of the estate.
 
Harewood House also has two cafes; the Courtyard Café and the Terrace Café which serve hot and cold food and beverages, as well as two ice cream stands which operate during the warmer months.
 
There are two shops at Harewood; one is a souvenir shop selling gifts and local produce, the other a toy store for children.

How to find Harewood House

 
Harewood House is located seven miles north of Leeds city centre in the village of Harewood.
 
By Car: from Leeds take the A58 out of the centre and then the A61 Harrogate Road for just over eight miles. Once on the A61 near Harewood follow the signposts for Harewood House.
 
By Bus: from Leeds, you can get the number 36 bus to Harewood. This bus runs three times an hour from Monday to Saturday and twice an hour on Sundays.

Thwaite Mills Watermill Museum

 
Located on an ‘island’ in Stourton, just south of the city of Leeds, the Thwaite Mills Watermill Museum sits between the River Aire and the Aire and Calder Navigation.
 
Thwaite Mills is one of the best last remaining examples in Britain of a water-powered mill.
 
Visitors will enjoy a unique opportunity to see water-powered industry of a bygone time up close; a working piece of history that’s still in use as it was centuries ago.
 
Thwaite House is a Georgian Grade II listed building, an historic home which has been preserved as a living artifact, one of the few such examples surviving from wartime Britain. Mill workers were able to live on the island self-sufficiently.
 

Attractions at Thwaite Mills

 
There are two working waterwheels at the Thwaite Mills Museum, demonstrating how our ancestors were dependent on them for the use of grain milling and other industrial uses.
 
Visitors are invited to see a fully restored engineer’s workshop, where all the parts of the milling machinery were repaired on-site in order to keep the water mills running continually, so as to insure a constant production of items.
 
There is the opportunity to see how the power of water can be used to turn solid rock into paint and putty, and how grain was milled by the effects of water driven friction.
 
You are given the chance to see the industrial processes of years gone by in the form of two unique working steam tools, the “Scotch Derrick” and the “Titian”, a steam crane and a tractor which are used in demonstrations.
 
Thwaite Mills also has extensive grounds featuring wildlife and a riverside sculpture walking trail.
 

Visiting Thwaite Mills Watermill Museum

 
Thwaite Mills has a gift shop offering souvenirs and commemorative memorabilia as well as a source of historical information.
 
Admission to Thwaite Mills costs £3.00 for Adults and £1.00 for Children.
There is also a Family rate of £5.00 which admits two adults and up to three children.
 
Thwaite Mills is open from 1.00pm to 5.00pm every Saturday and Sunday, all year round with the last admission at 3:15pm.
 
The Museum is open Tuesdays to Fridays during Leeds’ school holidays and on Bank Holidays, except Christmas day, Boxing Day and New Years day.

Thwaite Mills is located 2 miles south of the Leeds city centre off the A61.
 
Thwaite Mills accepts group reservations or rental of the facility for private functions, pre-booked visits can be arranged for times when the Museum is closed.

The River Aire

The River Aire is one of the major rivers in Britain, located in the Yorkshire. The source of the river is located in Malham Tarn and ends as a tributary to the River Ouse and is 71 miles in length (111 km).

The main reason for the River Aire being so well known is not for its size, but more for its journey through the city of Leeds and the way it shaped the city we know today.

Historically the river has been an important and integral part of the city of Leeds’ progression since the Industrial Revolution.

Even today as you walk along the River Aire, you can still see history all around in the remnants of warehouses and factories, many of which have now been converted into luxurious river apartments.

Visiting the River Aire

As it flows through the city of Leeds, the River Aire becomes a focal point for its impact on the city’s scenery as well as providing many attractions for visitors to enjoy.

The river provides relaxing areas for walks all year round and is a very popular destination in summer months.

For those that like a quiet walk or good ramble there is a designated River Aire walk that has been split into four sections:

Section 1 – Leeds City Station to Victoria Bridge Neville Street
Section 2 – Victoria Bridge to Leeds Bridge
Section 3 – Leeds Bridge to Centenary foot bridge
Section 4 – Centenary Foot Bridge to the Royal Armouries

River Cruise

For those that fancy something different and relaxing, there are Leeds City Cruises on the River Aire where you can enjoy a one-hour trip taking you under the Victorian bridges and past the historical heartland of Leeds.

Another option is the evening and Sunday meal cruises, where guests can enjoy a wonderful dining experience whilst travelling down the river enjoying the sights of Leeds as it lights up in the night sky.

Prices for a one-hour cruise are around £8 per person, a meal cruise is around £25 per person for a two-course meal during a two hour evening cruise.
