Yorkshire Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament presents The 6th Bradford Peace and Crafts Fair

This Saturday, 21st November 2009, The 6th Bradford Peace & Crafts Fair comes to The Victoria Hall.

The Peace & Crafts Fair is for Peace, Justice and the Environment.

Over 80 stalls will be filling the magnificent Victoria Hall at Saltaire including a huge range of local crafts, Christmas cards & gifts, ethical, organic & fair trade goods, as well as information & campaigning stalls.

There will also be delicious veggie food, music and childrens activities, local and national voluntary groups and complimentary therapists, all in a great atmosphere.

The Leeds 10 Kilometre Abbey Dash is being held on the 22nd November 2009 to raise money and awareness for Age Concern and Help the Aged.

Open to all applicants over 16 years of age, the Leeds Dash is a unique road race over a fast and flat course which is great for beginners and for the more serious runners who wish to achieve a personal best.

This popular run, which has been voted as one of the top three road races in the UK, sells out every year so booking a place as soon as possible is a must, either by using the links below or by calling 020 7239 1982.

Runners will receive their own race pack with a guide, chip timer and running number; prizes will be awarded, and music and entertainment will take place along the route – and a Leeds Abbey Dash t-shirt when they cross the finish line!

Fundraising and Sponsorship

This year the organisers are aiming to raise £200,000 from the Leeds Abbey Dash to help isolated older people, which amounts to just under £35 in sponsorship per runner.

The proceeds raised from the Dash will fund a HandyVan service in the Leeds and West Yorkshire area to help older people feel safer in their homes.

The King and I: from Siam to Leeds Grand Theatre!

The Grand Theatre Leeds is hosting a production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical The King and I, performed by the Leeds Amateur Operatic Society (LAOS).

The performance will run from Tuesday 17th November to Saturday 21st November 2009, showing at 7.15pm each evening with a matinee on the Saturday at 2.15pm.

Previously the musical theatre company LAOS has performed musicals such as Oliver!, Ragtime and Hello Dolly, and this will be the 102nd show that they have brought to The Grand Theatre.

The Rodgers and Hammerstein family musical is based on the book Anna and the King of Siam, by Margaret Langdon, and first opened on Broadway in 1951. The enchanting story follows Anna Leonowens and her son Louis as they travel to Siam, following the death of her husband, to take up the post of governess to the King’s many children.

Famously brought to the screen in 1956 starring Deborah Kerr as Anna and Yul Brynner as the King, The King and I features many well-known songs such as “Getting to Know You”, “Whistle a Happy Tune”, “Shall We Dance?”, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera!

LAOS are returning to the Grand Theatre Leeds from their succesful stint at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, where they performed The Producers, described by The Evening Post as “a golden nugget of musical theatre”.

The King and I by LAOS is sure to be another fantastic family show.

Leeds will be awash with music on Saturday 12th September, as the city plays host to a day of live piano music, being host to BBC Radio 3′s

Pianothon 2009 Leeds

The Pianothon is being held at the restored Clothworkers Centenary Concert Hall, part of the University of Leeds, with performances from over fifty slelected pianists from in and around the city of Leeds.

Professional pianists Benjamin Frith and Noriko Ogawa will be present, giving some of the lucky participants music masterclasses, and the host for the day-long event will be Radio 3 presenter Sarah Walker.

Amateur pianists take part in the Pianothon of all ages and abilities, playing either solo pieces or as part of a duo.

Any piece of music can be played, from the simplest of keyboard melodies to a full-blown classical piano concerto if the participant if confident enough!

The only restriction is that the playing of the piece can be no longer than ten minutes duration.

This is a fun opportunity for amateur pianists to perform in an informal concert environment, with the chance for anybody and everybody to come along and listen to them.

All of the performances will be recorded by the BBC, then posted and made available on the Pianothon website, as well as a selection being played on the Afternoon on 3 and Breakfast radio shows on Radio 3 the following week.

You can become part of the audience for this non-competitive celebratory event for free.

The Pianothon is informally run, and audiences are encouraged to come and go as they please.

Leeds Musicians

Local pianist Robin Wade, of Roundhay, will be playing some Rachmaninov, he told the BBC Leeds website:

“I am a little nervous but I love the idea of the Pianothon, especially it featuring people who wouldn’t normally get heard.

“I will be playing around midday but the event starts at 9am and I am looking forward to hearing all the other people play.

“I am used to practising at home but not playing to an audience on the piano. I studied at Leeds College of Music, and have played the guitar in live bands. I have learnt the piano piece by heart because I am not a great sight reader but it is a different kettle of fish playing in front of an audience.”

The City of Leeds has launched an official campaign to host games as part of the Football Association’s England 2018 World Cup bid.

City leaders made the case to be a Host City to World Cup bid inspectors.

An FA delegation has visited Leeds to assess its suitability as a possible host city for the 2018 World Cup, being taken them on a tour of sporting, cultural and tourism facilities.

Leeds is one of 15 cities competing across England to be chosen, with Liverpool and Manchester also bidding to be selected.

Millennium Square was host to a series of football-themed activities that were staged to coincide with the visit.

The mascots from Leeds United, Huddersfield Town and Bradford City football clubs were present, all helping to drum up support for the Leeds bid.

In December the city will find out if the application to become a candidate city has been successful, and in December 2010, will discover if England will be hosting the 2018 event.

If the city is successful, games would be held at the home of Leeds United, Elland Road.

Stadium improvements would have to be made so that it is capable of hosting matches up to and including quarter finals.

Shaun Harvey, chief executive of Leeds United, said: “The Leeds City Region has the facilities, passion, fans and ambition to be a magnificent host city.

“The FA’s delegation saw some of the best of what Yorkshire can offer today including an internationally recognised football stadium, world-class training facilities and some of the best outdoor spaces in the country.

“What we need now is for everybody to show their support for this once in a lifetime opportunity and vote for Leeds at backthebidleeds.com.”

Richard Brett, leader of Leeds City Council said “everything possible” was being done to ensure Leeds becomes a host city.

He said: “The prospect of hosting World Cup matches is an exciting one.
“It will bring huge benefits to the city and surrounding area and ensure that all that is great about Leeds and Yorkshire is shown to audiences around the world.”

The FA team of delegates visited training sites and city centre hotels, as well as touring green spaces that could be transformed into possible areas for fans’ villages.

Councillor Brett also said:“ If successful, this bid will bring a slice of world football to the Leeds City Region.

“It is an opportunity to build on the region’s rich and proud sporting heritage and show the rest of the world what Yorkshire can offer.

“Yorkshire has some of the most passionate football fans in the world and we need every single one to vote for Leeds at backthebidleeds.com – and help us bring football home to Leeds.”
